Handrails and Structural Remediation offshore

Challenge: Extending Life Without Interrupting Production

GRO executed the reinstatement of handrails and other safety structures like gates, ladders due to excessive corrosion of these structural members. The objective was to provide a solution that will enhance the lifespan of these structures. The replacement had to be like for like.

Solution: Precision Survey, Engineering and design, fabrication, performing Hot Dipped Galvanization (HDG) prior to coating and installation.

GRO deployed its expert team to the facility to survey the scope and produced accurate like for like design and fabricated the structures to meet specification. We also went ahead to perform HDG on the fabricated members after blasting of the fabricated panels and applied a three-coating system as per shipbuilding standards and client specifications.

How HDG works

Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing steel structures in a molten zinc bath, creating a thick, durable layer that protects the steel from corrosion. The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial layer, corroding before the underlying steel.

GRO successfully installed the new structure by bolting them to the deck and primary structures. The bolts were also HDG coated to ensure no dissimilarity in materials.

Results: Longer lifespan of structures, Reduction in maintenance cost

This solution has resulted in the following benefits to the client.

  • Provides long lasting protection of the structures against rust and corrosion by increasing the lifespan of the structures.
  • Reduction in maintenance cost for the client.
  • Better resistant to scratches and abrasions

The project not only extended the asset’s lifecycle but also reinforced GRO’s reputation for delivering offshore solutions with precision, safety, and cost savings for the client.
